Explore Parrtjima 2019, when Language Expressions inspired illuminated stockmen, an interactive maze and performances across Alice Springs.

Parrtjima moved into April in 2019, welcoming audiences from 5 to 14 April across Alice Springs Desert Park and Todd Mall. Language Expressions was the theme for this fourth edition, connecting the programme with the United Nations International Year of Indigenous Languages.

The Language of Kin welcomed visitors through an illuminated tunnel with soundscapes celebrating Arrernte kinship. The Language of the Stockmen enlarged original sculptures by Johnny Young and David Wallace, with contributions from younger artists at Tapatjatjaka Arts Centre. Their work brought the experiences of Indigenous station workers into the festival landscape.

An oversized maze based on artwork by Valerie Napurrurla Morris created a playful space for children, while sculptural moths appeared in Todd Mall. On the MacDonnell Ranges, a light show narrated by actor Aaron Pedersen followed a script written by Arrernte people, exploring Country and language. Grounded returned with animated works by seven artists from Central Australia.

The Knowledge Programme continued through talks and workshops, including an in-conversation session with Bruce Pascoe. Baker Boy appeared in the music programme, bringing his multilingual performance to the festival's final night. The move into autumn gave Parrtjima a new place in the Red Centre's annual events calendar.
