Look back at Parrtjima 2017, featuring giant lampshades, watercolour landscapes and interactive light at Alice Springs Desert Park.

Parrtjima returned to Alice Springs Desert Park from 22 September to 1 October 2017 with an expanded programme of Indigenous art and light. The second festival invited visitors to shape parts of the display themselves, alongside installations that transformed paintings into striking works beneath the desert sky.

The Expression Space suspended giant lampshades featuring work by Bindi Mwerre Anthurre Artists, bringing the Alice Springs art centre's paintings into an outdoor gallery. The Honouring Space, developed with Iltja Ntjarra Many Hands Art Centre, presented large landscape paintings that connected watercolour views of Country with the surrounding desert.

Grounded returned with a new selection of artworks from Ikuntji Artists and Barkly Regional Arts projected across the sand, accompanied by sound and storytelling. Visitors could also use hand gestures in the Interactive/Wave Space to change the colours and patterns of the lighting.

Across the ranges, The Heartbeat of Elements of Country explored wind, fire and water through light. The combination of works underfoot, suspended artworks and the distant illuminated landscape gave the 2017 festival several different ways to encounter the art of Central Australia.
