Hypnotic Reverberations

Back to 2025 Installations

A dreamlike transformative experience of light, shadow and water.

Artist – Bobby West Tjupurrula, a Pintubi man, leading artist and member of Papunya Tula Artists.

“I imagined the place, Palipalintja. I can see it when I close my eyes.”

A mesmerising and hypnotic installation of light, shadow and water. This installation tells a story of Bobby West Tjupurrula’s Country. He draws inspiration from his father Freddy West, capturing Country in a mesmerising and hypnotic form. Take a moment to be drawn in by Tjupurrula’s distinctive visual language, characterised by multidirectional chevrons. This work depicts important sites connected to the actions of the Tingari – ancestral figures who travelled across the Western Desert. The Tingari’s journey and interactions shaped both land and water sources, such as rockholes or soakages, and are integral to the landscape. This specific artwork continues to resonate the stories around Palipalintja, Western Australia.

The written story of the artwork is painted on the curved exterior wall of the installation.
