Grounded
Ceremonies, once a timeless tradition of passing on story through depictions in the sand with the use of wildflowers, has evolved uniquely in the Central and Western Deserts into a modern-day art movement. While it has roots in ancient cultural practices, the art form has adapted and flourished, blending traditional techniques with contemporary expressions across new mediums.
Grounded is an immersive, large-scale projection that transforms the red earth under your feet into a dynamic living canvas. This year’s event combines this breathtaking visual display with sand light box and projection workshops, offering visitors the unique opportunity to sit down with our artists and explore the significance of markings in sand. From animal footprints and skin groups to clan symbols and ceremonial art, the workshops shed light on the cultural practices and stories behind these markings. Offering a deeper connection to the rich traditions that continue to influence contemporary Indigenous art.
