Water Tree

Back to Signature Installations

The sky provides the water finders (water tree) of the autumn skies (flight)

Strung over four archways, the colourful spectacle replicates the incredible natural phenomenon of thousands of budgerigars flocking together.

Karen paints the small, bright green birds, ngatijirri (budgerigar), her dreaming story, using traditional iconography, and abstract colours and shapes to represent the sky.

Each time flocks of these colourful birds land and roost in the trees the custodians of the ancestral ngatijirri in the Yuendumu area perform ceremonies of singing and dancing. After a good rain, ngatijirri can successfully breed, resulting in an explosion of the population.
